The French don?t seem to have quite grasped the problem. Maria Cheng reports for Associated Press:

In most developed countries, children with autism are usually sent to school where they get special education classes. But in France, they are more often sent to a psychiatrist where they get talk therapy meant for people with psychological or emotional problems.

Things are slowly changing, but not without resistance. Last month, a report by France?s top health authority concluded there was no agreement among scientists about whether psychotherapy works for autism, and it was not included in the list of recommended treatments.

That provoked an outcry from psychiatrists. Groups including Freudian societies, the World Association of Psychoanalysis and France?s Child Institute started a petition calling on the French government to recognize their clinical approach, focused on psychotherapy.

?The situation in France is sort of like the U.S. in the 1950s,? said Dr. Fred Volkmar, a U.S. expert who directs the Child Study Center at Yale University. ?The French have a very idiosyncratic view of autism and, for some reason, they are not convinced by the evidence.?

Behavioral methods, which focus on helping autistic children communicate with others and develop social skills, are the norm in Britain, Canada, Japan, the U.S. and elsewhere in Europe. But they?re seldom used in France.

France has long been criticized for its approach to treating autism. In 2002, the charity Autism Europe lodged a complaint against France with the Council of Europe, charging the country was refusing to educate autistic children, as required under the European Social Charter.

The charge was upheld and the European Committee of Social Rights declared ?France has failed to achieve sufficient progress? in educating autistic children. The committee also slammed France for making autistic people ?an excluded group? and said there was a chronic shortage of care.

Volkmar said some forms of psychotherapy might be helpful for high-functioning autistic children to handle specific problems like anxiety, but should not be considered a first-line treatment. He said the vast majority of autistic children in the U.S. ? more than 95 percent ? attend school.

But French children with autism are lagging far behind. According to government data, fewer than 20 percent of autistic children attend school. Mostly they?re either kept at home or go to a day hospital for psychiatric sessions.

And I’m Robert Siegel.

A new technology makes it possible for a quadriplegic to use only thought to move a robotic arm. According to a report out yesterday, a Massachusetts woman was one of two patients to use the arm. She picked up a bottle with coffee in it and drank it, using a straw. This is the first time in 15 years that she was able to feed herself.

And to explain how the technology works, we’re joined now by Dr. Leigh Hochberg, who is a neurologist, an engineer and the lead author on this study. Welcome to the program.

DR. LEIGH HOCHBERG: Good afternoon. Thanks very much for having me.

SIEGEL: And first, I understand that the key here is a tiny sensor that’s implanted in the subject’s brain. What exactly is in there?

HOCHBERG: That’s right, a tiny sensor that we refer to as an array of electrodes. It’s about 4-by-4 millimeters. It’s about the size of a baby aspirin and we tap that into a part of the brain called the motor cortex. And it’s a very important part of the brain for the control of movement, for example, for the control of the arm or the hand.

SIEGEL: And this little sensor is actually taking the electricity in the brain and it’s transmitting it?

HOCHBERG: It is. Each of those 96 little electrodes can record from one or more neurons or brain cells. And those neurons communicate through electrical activity, that’s the language of the nervous system. So the array of electrodes listens to that electrical activity. It sends it down some fine wires to a – what we call a pedestal, which is really a plug that sits right on top of the head. And then, during our research sessions, we connect that plug via cable to some computers.

And the job of those computers is to, what we call, decode the neural activity that’s associated with her when she thinks about moving her hand. And at the beginning of the research, we build essentially a map between the patient’s own brain activity – that is the neural activity that we’re recording from that little place in the cortex – and their intended movement.

SIEGEL: So, the impulses go from the woman to the computer, and then from the computer to the robotic arm?

HOCHBERG: Exactly. It goes to the computer to whatever assistive device we may have connected on that particular day. In this manuscript that was out today in Nature, it was connected to one of two robotic assistive devices.

SIEGEL: The picture of a woman using a robotic arm, knowing that she hasn’t been able to do this in so many years – since she suffered a stroke – is very, very dramatic. Is the science behind it equally dramatic? Is it a huge leap that’s happened here?

HOCHBERG: As you stated, she for nearly 15 years had been unable to use her own arm. And when she thought about using her arm and hand to reach out to pick up that thermos of coffee – a cinnamon latte, to be precise…

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

HOCHBERG: And she brought it to her mouth. She took a sip. To see the smile on her face at that moment was really a remarkable thing.

I’m pleased by this step in the science. And I think that it’s very encouraging for a number of reasons. One is that her stroke had occurred nearly 15 years before these particular research sessions.

Which means that her motor cortex that was essentially disconnected from the rest of her body, as a result of the stroke, was still working, was still there, was still trying to send the same signals down to her arm. And those signals being present meant that we could harness them and allow her to reach out and control that robotic limb.

SIEGEL: Just another example of what the brain retains even after it’s lost the ability to communicate with a limb.

HOCHBERG: Indeed.

SIEGEL: What’s next? Would do you hope for most here?

HOCHBERG: We have a number of goals in the ongoing research. Both of our participants, say in this current paper, are known as what’s locked in. They are not only unable to move their arms and their legs, but they’re also unable to speak. So we hope that we can develop a neurally-based communication technology.

The real dream for the research though is for people with paralysis to one day reconnect brain to limb.

SIEGEL: Well, its fascinating research and fascinating thing that you’ve accomplished. And thank you for talking with us about it.

HOCHBERG: Thanks so much.

More and more entrepreneurs are coming from a very conscious place in how they run their businesses. It?s about honesty, integrity, the desire to serve, giving the best we can and making a profit.

When we are profitable we have more choice in the impact we want to make.

For example, if a colleague is running in a marathon to raise money for homeless people, I don?t have to give much thought to whether or not I can make a donation when my business is profitable.

If I have a family member who may need help with a medical bill or groceries, when my business is profitable, I don?t have to worry about writing a check.

If the local youth group at my church is raising money for their own cause, I can easily make the decision to help out.

Many of my friends, colleagues and clients feel the same way.

The Internet has opened up incredible opportunity to those of us who want our businesses and all we offer to be an expression of who we are.

In order to do this there are certain realities we have to accept. One, an online business is not about becoming an Internet Guru. It?s about using all the Internet has to offer to reach your market. Whether you are in the health

As you grow your business and your product offerings always keep in mind that whether someone invests one dollar or one thousand dollars you must never take this for granted. Appreciate the fact that each and every dollar represents a consumer?s trust in you.

Not everyone is cut out for running an online business. But for those who are, this is an incredible way to live. What could be better than knowing you are making a positive difference in the lives of so many?

d. High margin profits

So I can create an E-book now and sell to 1 Million people at a specific price without spending on printing, posting the book to them or even opening a shop. All they need is have a computer to download it to and immediately they have access to their product?.Chikena!

You need to be able to create an information product.

Here?s the step?

1. Create your outline on paper -

I usually write down the outline of my niche on paper. For instance, I am working on a book titled ?Importation Secrets? and I already wrote down exactly what I want the product to solve?on paper. And you know why you should write on paper?

Its because we were trained and taught to always think when we have a pen in our hand with a paper. Have you noticed that ideas flow in your head if you have a pen and paper better than when you sit down behind a computer to type.

2. Write down the chapters -

On that same piece of paper, write down your chapters. Never write your book without writing the chapters first. This will give you a sense of direction and you?ll be able to complete your product on time.

3. Start your Openoffice Software and start typing

You remember the Open office software I asked you to download the other time? Open it and start typing your product out. If you have a full time job and have limited time, mandate yourself to write two pages everyday. By the end of 2 weeks, you?ll have 28 pages book.

4. Edit and then give to someone to edit

Once you complete typing out your product, spend some time to edit it for errors. Also, this is when you get inspired to add some other sections to the book. Once you are done, give it to a friend and get them to edit for you.

5. Convert it to PDF

PDF is the format for all E-books. There is a feature on Openoffice software that let you convert your product to PDF. By going to ?File? and ?save as PDF, your written product will be converted to an E-Book.

And that is it, you have your own ready made product. Trust me, it?s as simple as that. Now, you might say?..I have tried creating a product in the past and its not as easy as you?ve just explained above. You might even say, I have tried creating a product in the past, but i didn?t have clue where to go from when i get started.

In collaboration with the Management Team, he/she will be responsible for strategic (internal and external) communications, marketing, public relations, branding, and outreach. This position will report to the Executive Director, serve on Island Conservation?s Management Team, and will be based in Santa Cruz, California.

RESPONSIBILITIES Organizational ? Collaborate with the Executive Director and the Management Team to develop communications strategies that will broaden Island Conservation?s reach and deepen our impact, including our global effort to protect imperiled species and restore ecological integrity of priority islands. ? Develop and execute communications, marketing, and external relations plans in support of island conservation. ? Identify and develop key messages, positioning, and outreach strategies and materials in support of priority partnership development, external relations, policy, and philanthropy. ? Identify significant media and public policy issues that can be leveraged to support Island Conservation?s work, and create and execute plans to take advantage of these opportunities. ? Oversee organizational response to media and other inquiries. ? Serve as executive editor for the organization?s external communications. ? Develop a plan for internal communication in collaboration with the Executive Director Global Campaign ? Lead effort to name and brand the Global Campaign, the threatened island biodiversity database, and its analytic products. ? Help create messages and products to build awareness in key, targeted constituencies. ? Develop case statements, promotional materials, and content for major fundraising proposals. ? Collaborate with the Regional Directors to develop regionally focused communication strategies and products. Conservation Operations ? Lead the development, creation, and execution of project and crisis communication plans. ? Develop project fact sheets and other outreach material for projects. Philanthropy ? Develop case statements, promotional materials, and content for major fundraising proposals.

? A strong commitment to Island Conservation?s mission. ? Minimum seven years of communications/marketing experience preferably with the NGO sector. ? Degree in communications, journalism, marketing, or a related field. ? Excellent organizational skills. ? Ability to both work independently and take direction from others, the ability to solve problems with limited supervision, and the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines. ? Exceptional oral and written communications abilities, including public speaking and a facility for translating complex information for a broad range of audiences. ? Impeccable integrity. ? DEMONSTRATED EXPERIENCE ? Significant communications experience that includes a blend of advocacy and media relations. A way to let soldiers scale a wall like Spider-Man

When soldiers next need to scale a concrete wall, they should leave the gecko tape at home and opt for vacuum suction pads instead.

Such a set-up, illustrated in the video below, took first place among university entries in a recent design competition sponsored by the Air Force Research Laboratory.?

The goal was to design a system that would allow a four-member team of Special Operations forces to scale buildings or mountains in a variety of conditions.?

The Personal Vacuum Assisted Climber was created by mechanical engineering students at Utah State University. Gizmag has the technical details:?

?At the heart of the two PVAC units were two back-mounted carpet extractor motors. These each created suction with a three-stage impeller, were powered by seven lithium-polymer batteries, and created a seal against the wall using connected handheld pads lined with closed-cell foam. A pressure release lever on each pad allowed it to be secured against the wall when being used by the climber to pull themselves up, then released so it could be lifted higher.?

The competition was held at an abandoned cement silo near Wright State University in Ohio. Two team members scaled the wall with the PVAC units. Once on top, they dropped a rope for the other team members to ascend with a powered winch.

The competition also pitted the three United States service academies against each other ? Air Force, Naval, and West Point.?

The Air Force Academy took top prize with a gun-launched device that would reach the top of the climbing surface and explosively set a concrete anchor for the lead rope.?

The team also developed a carbon fiber ladder, which could be used in leap-frog fashion with periodically placed wall anchors to allow a climber to scale the wall.

In the future, humans may gain for even more Spiderman-like abilities, such as climbers inspired by beetles and geckos.?For now, though, we have vacuum cleaners.
